Art & Soul Portland 2019 Was a Blast!

I absolutely love teaching at art retreats across the country and Art & Soul is one of my all-time favorites! I love the excitement and energy of a gathering of creatives of this magnitude. There is a feeling of creative possibility at every corner and a feeling of kinship as you meet and reconnect with fellow artists. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first retreat or your 100th, there’s always a sense of community and familiarity.

My students made an amazing amount of colorful, soulful and vibrant artwork! I’m always so proud of them for trying new things, or taking adventurous steps in their creative path. In Painted Portfolio Journals (above), we started by creating our own unique collage papers which we used to create the insides of our journal as well as used to decorate our covers. We played with paint, spray inks and various mark-making materials and techniques.

Next up was She Three Collage Portraits where we explored building up colorful, textured layers in our art journals and incorporating collage images over the top. We explored the theme of Past-Present-Future when it came to our art making process as well as telling a story with our art.

Then was More is More: Messy Masterpieces where we played with various materials and techniques to create heavily layered papers and pages in our art journals. We learned how to add lots of saturated, vibrant layers of color while finding ways to isolate and carve out a little calm in the storm.

If you were so lucky to join us this time around, what was your favorite moment at Art & Soul Portland? Next up, I’ll be teaching at Art & Soul Colorado Springs from May 28-June 2, 2019. There’s still plenty of time to join! Can’t make it? Find out if I’m teaching in a city near you:
