Let’s get this collage paper party started! I’ll show you all my favorite materials and go-to techniques that I use to create bright, bold, luscious collage paper! These collage papers are PERFECT for use in your art journals, mixed media collage canvases, decoupage paper, and other mixed media projects. We’ll start with creative mark making using oil pastels and stamping found items into acrylic paint. I’ll show you the tricks for using the right colors to create contrast and the tips to avoid muddy colors. We’ll use spray inks and acrylic paint through stencils, and use rubbing plates and stamps to create beautiful resists. But we’re not done yet! We’ll also use the gelli plate to create gorgeous textures and patterns that we will also pile more fun layers onto! I’ll also show you some very simple techniques with my favorite of all time art supply: the paint pen! They truly add that finishing touch and really are the life of the party! In this class, we'll focus mainly on the process and learning a ton of techniques but we'll also have a little time at the end to play with our collage paper in our art journals!

I'll help you take the guesswork out of the blank canvas with these 6 easy-yet-dynamic works of art. These 6 paintings can be created on any surface--canvas, wood, art journal, etc. and with the materials that you already have in your art stash. You will go from feeling uninspired and stuck, to feeling full of creativity and inspiration by the end of class. We will cover various techniques that can be mixed and matched on each canvas. We'll explore: my favorite art materials and how to use them, mark-making, print-making, collage techniques, sketching/drawing basics, adding texture, composition, and basic color theory. We'll work on all 6 canvases at a time, jumping around and using them as a way to keep our flow, keep inspired, and use them each as jumping-off points to the next canvas. We'll work fast and loose at first, as we free up our creative minds, and then make "smaller," more precise moves as we finish up each canvas. I like to use the rainbow as my palette, but you can also create in your own preferred color palette!

Junk Journal Deconstruction

Sedona Arts Center

July 17-18, 2024

Some call us monsters for ripping up and altering books--I think of us more as creatives who can see potential in anything! Let's gather together with kindred spirits and rip and alter to our hearts' content! We'll take an ordinary vintage book and turn it into something extraordinary using paint, embellishments, and reconstructive techniques. You bring the book, (BYOB!) and I'll supply the rest! Each part of the book will be put to good and new uses as we deconstruct our books and reconstruct them into fabulous works of art. We'll also create our own unique collage papers to be used inside our new books and explore several journaling jumpstarts and background-starting techniques to get you going!
